A peek at the black book

i. A dinner inside a 17th-century convent

We took a client to a restaurant last month that occupies a former 17th-century convent in the heart of the city. Vaulted ceilings, original stone, candlelight on hand-painted azulejo tiles. The kind of room that does the work for you the moment your guests walk in.

Forty covers, a tasting menu built around Portuguese producers, and an after-dinner courtyard for digestifs under the orange trees. No gala backdrop required.

ii. A hidden bar in Alfama, only the locals know

Tucked into one of Alfama’s narrowest streets, behind a door you would walk past three times before noticing, is a bar we now use for almost every Lisbon programme. It seats around thirty.

The owner pours, the fado plays softly from a corner, and the cocktails lean on Portuguese spirits you will not have tried at home. The closing-night moment that turns a good trip into one your delegates remember for years.

iii. Secret venues

An old house with no sign on the door. Inside, what was once the meeting place for artists and journalists in the last century. Little rooms, hundred-year-old tiles on the walls, food that arrives looking simple and tastes anything but. One of our favourite lunches to round off a walking or tuk-tuk tour.

Beyond the city: Cascais & Sintra

A secret weapon

Lisbon has a feature most European capitals do not: you can leave it. Twenty minutes out of the city by car and you are in Cascais, all sea light and mansion architecture. Forty minutes the other direction and you are in Sintra, where palaces sit in mist on green mountains and the coastline drops into the Atlantic.

Both work for incentive groups who want to feel they have actually been somewhere. We use a private quinta in Sintra for full-day team retreats, complete with garden lunch and a coastal walk. In Cascais we have a partnership with a coastal villa that sleeps thirty, ideal for executive offsites where the brief is “somewhere not Lisbon, but close.” And the drive between is its own programming — small wineries, viewpoints, a roadside lunch that feels stolen from a book.

Our Lisbon operation is led by senior planners on the ground in Portugal. Every venue in our black book has been pre-vetted by us. Capacities run from twenty-person executive offsites up to four-hundred-delegate conferences. We work end to end — brief, venue sourcing, production, logistics, on-site delivery — or as the local DMC partner to an in-house team or agency that wants the on-the-ground expertise without losing creative ownership.
