Spanish trains adapt to the changing demands of members of the public

36302_spanish-rail-network-and-stations-to-offer-wifi_1_largeThe Spanish government has announced, via the Ministry for Development, that wifi connections are going to be offered on trains and in stations which are part of local rail networks in an effort to modernize the services offered on this form of public transport.

As a result of the “Wifi y +” collaboration between Renfe and Telefónica, in future it will be possible to go online while travelling on trains and while waiting at stations, although the first phase of the project will comprise the installation of an integral wifi system only in the current fleet of 89 AVE trains and at 20 local stations.

Connectivity tests have already been carried out over the last three months in an AVE S-100 train on which an antenna, a router, access points, servers and all of the necessary cabling and wiring were fitted, and Renfe now believes that the best technical solutions to the various problems identified have now been found. During November it is planned for similar systems to be installed on all S-100 trains currently serving the AVE route between Madrid and Seville, combining the use of the Hispasat and Indra satellites with 3-G and 4-G connections all along the track. This will allow over 400 passengers to operate online at any given time.

As for the wifi services to be offered at “Cercanías” stations, pilot schemes have been carried out at Getafe Centro in Madrid and Plaza de Cataluña in Barcelona, where facilities are already up and running to allow a free 15-minute connection on platforms and inside the station buildings. This pilot scheme will now be extended to twenty more stations.

At the same time, a new platform offering varied content and services to passengers has been presented by Telefónica. By means of this platform rail passengers will be able navigate their way around sections devoted to films, TV series, TV channels, books, newspapers, sports, games, entertainment and education courses. These will be accessed via an App, enabling Renfe and Telefónica to gain direct revenue from their investment as well as the indirect benefits which it is hoped will be reaped from adapting trains to the demands of the 21st-century public.
